Afsaneh Akhoondi is an Iranian-Canadian visual artist based in Toronto. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, drawing, printmaking, and installation, often integrating Plexiglas and mixed media. She believes in drawing from everything. Drawing on her life experiences, Afsaneh creates works rooted in the profound social and political changes she witnessed in Iran, including: revolution, war, sanctions, and women’s protests for fundamental freedoms. These events have deeply shaped her artistic vision and perspective.
Since immigrating to Canada, her art projects have explored the intersections of identity, gender, and cultural continuity between her homeland and her new environment. Afsaneh has presented seven solo exhibitions and participated in more than 40 national and international group shows.
Beyond her studio practice, she is a former faculty member and art teacher, coordinator and programmer, writer of art reviews, curator for student exhibitions, and organizer of student portfolios. She has participated in international symposiums and workshops, including a UNESCO residency in Paris in 2016.
Afsaneh holds a Bachelor’s degree in Painting and a Master of Fine Arts from Azad Art University in Tehran, as well as a certificate in Arts Management from Centennial College, Toronto
